Let me tell you of one faithful pastor who lives in Kigali, Rwanda. He is called Pastor Amani, which means Peace. Even though he is personally battling cancer, he leads a denomination as well as the evangelical alliance of churches (some 3000) in the nation. Weekly he leads teams from his church in outreach into the country. I thought that I understood what outreach was, but I was humbled by this wise and Godly man, for outreach to him means being the feet, hands and heart of Jesus as he goes looking in the slums, shacks and on the streets, seeking to find those left orphaned, sick or dying from AIDS.
Rwanda Churches Initiative
Churches Together-Rwanda is working to change their community for Christ. Formed in the late summer of 2005, this group of about 3000 indigenous churches is working together in community, training and equipping the church with skills for community and nation development and transformation. Other activities include youth gatherings and study trips to help create unity of the members. Breakthrough Partners is mentoring and consulting with the leadership of Rwanda Churches Together to bring community transformation to Rwanda through the local church.
Another group of churches, the AESD (Action of Evangelical Churches for the Promotion of Health and Development), is training pastors around the whole country, enabling them to plan and strategize more effectively. Their activities have focused on vision and mission planning, strategies, objectives and activities, and how to carry out their plans in a timely manner. This work is done with a limited staff and few materials, yet God is blessing and raising up leaders who are effectively discipling their nation.
