 Los Amigos at Breakthrough Partners
After months of prayer, God is showing us more clearly how He wants us to be working locally for global impact. He is moving to make it possible to offer immigrant and local communities excellent resources that will change lives, build hope and encourage trust and partnership. Through working closely with multicultural leaders, we will focus on building up the next generation of leaders from among immigrant communities.
We look for breakthroughs in adolescents’ lives that will be turning points at critical times as they grow and develop in a multicultural society. We are developing a program to work holistically using a variety of resources and connections to guide these adolescents to become multicultural leaders. Most importantly, they will be able to see themselves as God does, experience God’s unlimited love, and be light in this world. We strongly believe that this present generation of adolescents has tremendous potential to be the leaders who will rebuild their communities.
In the initial stage of our work we chose Latino adolescents as our target population. Research has shown that Latinos are the fastest growing immigrant community in the Pacific Northwest. Just in Washington State they represent about 16% of the total population. Sadly, a significant percentage of this population is at risk of addictions to drugs and alcohol and of involvement in gang violence. There are few institutions or resources that work holistically with immigrant adolescents. We would like to make a difference and fill part of this gap.
We have now formed our first Latino team, “Los amigos at Breakthrough Partners.” This team will work in areas such as leadership development, theological education, public health, business administration, advocacy and the arts. In the following months we will offer services in several Puget Sound communities in collaboration with local churches. We are planning breakout meetings with intercultural conversations, concerts, mission trips and leadership retreats.
